Arriving in Santiago: the Pilgrim's Mass has moved
If you are walking into Santiago in the next few weeks, the ending looks a little different from the one in the guidebooks. Restoration work on the cathedral's main chapel began on 16 October, and until further notice it changes two things every pilgrim plans around.
- Most Pilgrim's Masses have moved. The 9:30, 12:00 and 19:30 Masses are now celebrated in the church of San Agustín, beside the Mercado de Abastos and a few minutes on foot from the cathedral. Go there, not to the cathedral, for the midday Mass.
- One Mass stays put. The 7:30 Pilgrim's Mass is still in the cathedral, in the Chapel of the Communion.
- The Botafumeiro is not swinging. The great thurible hangs from the crossing dome, which is part of the same restoration. It is out of service and the cathedral has announced no date for its return.
What has not changed: the cathedral itself is open for visits at the usual hours, every day from 7:00 to 21:00, with entry through the Puerta de Platerías. Backpacks are not allowed inside, so drop yours at your albergue or in a locker before you go in.
If seeing the Botafumeiro fly was part of your plan, check the cathedral's website in the days before you arrive. The works have no published end date, and the arrangements can change again.
